Writing 2 Class Notes -- Week 6 (September 29)

Greetings!

Happy October 1!  Fall is definitely here!

This Thursday was National Coffee Day, and since coffee is one of may favorite "comfort foods," I asked the students to write about their "comfy and cozy" place for the Quick Write.  They shared what that place looked like and felt like. Being comfortable and cozy also included choice foods, beverages, books, and/or TV.

Our Words of the Day:
Chromo-- fr. Greek, khroma, color -- a shortened version of chromolithograph, which is a picture printed in colors from a series of lithographic stones or plates
Inquire-- fr. Latin, inquirere, to seek for -- to seek information by asking
Frivolity-- fr. Latin, frivolus, worthless, trifling-- an act that is self-indulgent and carefree, lacking seriousness

Following our beginning of class activities, we discussed the Rough Drafts that were handed back.  I asked students to look at their own essays and find the first error/mistake that was marked.  We used these as a starting point to discuss matters of grammar, usage, and writing.  Going forward, I plan to use their own writing to teach about sentences and writing strategies.  They should keep all of the homework for this class until the end of the year.  (Note:  Remember to hand in your rough draft along with the Final Draft of your Process Essay.)

Our Grammar section this week focused on Active and Passive Voice when using verbs.  Simply, a verb is considered active when the subject of the sentence is performing the action.  The verb is passive when the action is being performed on the subject.
Example:  The child ate the cookie (Active)
The cookie was eaten by the child.  (Passive)
Using the passive voice is grammatically correct, but when a student writes a lot of these, an essay can get overly wordy and cumbersome.  Additionally, using active verbs gives strength to your writing.  You should use a passive voice when you the verb is secondary; use it when the subject that is receiving the action is the primary focus.  (This is learning how to write strategically.

Assignments for Next Week:
-- Read Chapters 28 - 30
-- No Study Questions or Quiz
-- 5 Vocabulary Words
